Public Transit - Tips for Boulderers

Public transit as a boulderer can seem cumbersome, but with some smart planning, it’s pretty easy. I hope the following tips inspire you to give it a try.

Bouldering Essentials

This is my standard kit for a day of bouldering using public transit. It’s not that different from my kit if I were still driving to the boulders.

  1. Climbing shoes. Usually, I bring a single pair that is specific to the boulder I’m trying. Sometimes, I bring a second pair to have the option of a different style.

  2. Chalk Pot, Brush, & Tape (in side pocket). I personally use Friction Labs.

  3. iPhone Camera Tripod. This one is light and flexible.

  4. Theraband. Essential for my warm-up.

  5. Skin care kit.

  6. USB battery pack + cable.

  7. Wallet.

  8. Salomon Soft Flask XA Filter 490ML/16OZ 42. A great addition to the kit. This allows me to hydrate directly from the stream when my water bottle runs dry. I use it quite often, especially in the warmer months.

  9. Snacks. I always bring roughly a 1000 calories to the boulders. This ensures I never go hungry if the session ends up being much longer than planned.

  10. Water bottle.

  11. Headlamp.

  12. Portable hangboard. I bring this when needed for warming up the fingers. But it comes with me most of the time.

Not Pictured:

  1. Pre-Climbing Meal. Either at home or on the train, I eat a full meal. I usually carry that onto the train and eat it immediately.

  2. Makita Fan. If the specific boulder/conditions require it, I stuff the fan into one of the boulder pads.
